Murray State first to offer 2019 Guard

Like bananas, offers come in bunches.  A week ago Kira Lewis Jr. was a promising sophomore-to-be out of Alabama.  Days later he has three D1 offers.

Saturday Lewis Jr. competed, actually excelled at the Murray State Elite Camp.

“It went good,” said Lewis Jr.  “I was learning that they play fast.  They don’t want you to move the ball slow.”

Lewis Jr. typically operates with the ball in his hands.  He projects as a college combo guard, or the new favored scoring lead guard.  He has the speed, assertiveness to thrive at this spot.

Lewis’ Murray State offer was quickly followed up by a UAB offer hours later.

“They were recruiting me for awhile,” said Lewis Jr.  “I guess the coach said he was going to offer me earlier.  He just got the job and he had a baby, so he said he forgot.”

Kira’s mother called and told him the UAB news.  Because they have been on him for months, the UAB offer was not as surprising as Murray State’s advance.

“I was surprised they offered,” said Lewis Jr.  “At the Elite Camp the assistant coach told me to go talk to the head coach.  And then he offered me then.  We were on the court.  We were face-to-face.”

Lewis Jr. has the skills and body to be a college play someday.  Specifically though, what reasons did MSU give for extending the early offer?

“(Coach McMahon) told me that I was young and that I had a good skill set and he liked the way I played.    First, I talked to my mom about it and then I put it on social media and then everybody found out.”

AAU Showcasing

Throughout the ’16 AAU spring, Kira competed with Alabama Challenge 15u.  In fact, Lewis Jr. sent a particularly competitive contest against Travelers AAU (KY) to overtime with a buzzer-beater.  He is a volume scorer with great quickness.

Lewis Jr. shared with OVCHoops.com that his decision on a July AAU team will come in the next few days.

“I am deciding that this week.”

Whomever Kira runs with, he will be watched.  Middle Tennessee joined the movement by offering Monday.

“Middle Tennessee, my high school told me,” said Lewis Jr.  “It was today (Monday).  I camped with UAB last year and I went to Middle Tennessee team camp this summer.  UAB was last August.”

Dream schools for Kira include “Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State.”
