Meet Chidi, UT Martin Visitor
All weekend UT Martin is hosting junior college prospect Chidi Udengwu for an official visit.
“Yeah, I am taking the visit instead (of school) because I have no class tomorrow,” said Chidi Udengwu.
Who is Chidi?
Chidi Udengwu grew up in Diamond Bar, California. According to Udengwu it is a neighboring city to Chino Hills, California. You certainly have heard about Chino Hills in the last year (Lonzo, LaMelo Ball).
“I started playing (organized) basketball my freshman year in high school, cause I got cut from my middle school team,” said Udengwu. “And before high school yeah I would always just play at the park.”
Chidi is able to operate as a backcourt player at 6-foot-7. Because he grew to that full height late (after
2015) he refined guard skills throughout much of his career.
“I used to be average height,” said Chidi Udengwu. “Then I just shot up.”
Udengwu played in high school, but really thinks his prep school season was the biggest help.
“But where I really developed was Cooper Academy, a prep school I went to after high school for one year.”
Coppin State was his first offer. In addition to UT Martin, Louisiana-Monroe offered Udengwu. Jacksonville State and Pepperdine are expressing interest.
In 28.1 mpg last season Chidi averaged 9.4 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Though he identifies as a point guard those rebounding numbers suggest more rim-rummaging than most guards.
“My role there is to lead the team and be a floor general since I’m the point guard.”
UT-Martin likes him as a versatile basketball player. They would love to get their first Class of 2018 commitment in the coming days. Chidi’s official visit ends Sunday.
